Charity of the Month
We have a box at the back of the church (separate from the main offertory plate) where every month we collect money for a different charity. This can either be a local charity or national charity. So, if there is a charity dear to your heart that you would like to nominate for us to support, please talk to Sally Bramdaw or Humphrey Clarke who administer the 'Charity of the Month' scheme.
We have been running this scheme since September 2004, and over the years we have collected nearly £10,000 for the various charites. So far in 2016 we have raised the following amounts:
January - Croydon Refugee Day Centre - £65.26
February/March - Bishop of Southwark's Lent Call - £122.05
April - Reverse Rett - £80.00
May - Christian Aid - £102.63
June - Sutton Night Watch - £133.75
July/August - Sutton Schoolswork - £83.00
September - Sutton Alzheimers Society - £91.25
October - Operation Christmas Child - £106.25
November - Macular Disease
Bible a Month Club
The Bible a Month Club is an initiative of the Bible Society. An individual will have a nominated month in the year when they donate £5 which goes to providing Bibles for people who might otherwise go without. For more information on the Bible Society and the Bible A Month club, please click here.
Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child, otherwise known as the 'Shoebox' appeal. There are millions of children who, because of ecomomic pressures, will not receive a Christmas gift this year, or may well have never received one ever. So the idea is to pack up a shoebox, wrap it and fill it with love and send it to a child who would otherwise go without. This year, we at St Barnabas have collected 77 shoeboxes - so that is 77 more children with a smile on their face this Christmas! So thank you to all the congregation and uniformed groups who have created a shoebox, or who have contributed money via the 'Charity of the Month' box in October.
Operation Christmas Child is run by Samaritans Purse which is a much bigger relief organisation. Here is their mission statement from their website:
Samaritan’s Purse is a nonprofit, Christian organisation providing church support and emergency relief and development assistance to suffering people around the world. Samaritan’s Purse is meeting the physical needs of victims of war, famine, natural disaster, and disease with the aim of demonstrating God’s love and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. The aid and assistance are given without regard to the race, creed, gender, religion, or ethnicity of the beneficiaries

Sutton Night Watch
Sutton Night Watch is a support network for the homeless. Their goal is that nobody should have to go to bed on an empty stomach. Sutton Night Watch set up a stall behind Sutton Station on a Wednesday and Friday evening where they give out soup and sandwiches (or whatever is on the 'menu' for the evening!) together with tea and chat.
This year St Barnabas has supported Sutton Night Watch by having them as our 'Charity of the Month' for June and also giving them the food that was donated to us during this years' Harvest Festival.
